WRAP - No prison in Westbury
WRAP media release - 11 September 2021

Closure of Ashley Youth Detention Centre

Since the Premier's announcement of the closure of Ashley Youth Detention Centre, there has been intense speculation as to whether the Government might consider shifting the Northern Regional Prison proposal from the Brushy Rivulet reserve to the Ashley site.

"WRAP has been fighting the proposal to build the prison near Westbury for 2 years now. We incorporated with the express objective to protect Westbury and its surrounds from this controversial project.

It should be no surprise, therefore, that we would welcome any decision to remove the prison project from our vicinity. Aside from its proximity to Westbury, the Brushy Rivulet nature reserve is utterly inappropriate on so many other levels.

That said, we are a grass roots community organisation and we strongly sympathise with any community that has a decision made about its future without proper consultation. Having been through this here in Westbury, we would not wish it on another community.

Historically, our Council has been in the habit of promoting the prison in this municipality without any prior consultation with its ratepayers.

Despite WRAP's motion passed resoundingly at the public meeting on 11th August asking Council to withdraw its previous support for the Northern Regional Prison (both at Ashley and near Westbury), the Mayor has yet again immediately come out in support of the suggestion that the prison should be built at Ashley.

When will the Mayor learn that ratepayers need to be listened to before the Council adopts a position on such a controversial project?

WRAP cannot, and does not, purport to speak for the Deloraine community, which will no doubt make its views on the future of the Ashley site known over coming months.

We would strongly encourage the Council to urgently engage in transparent consultation about the future of the Ashley site with its ratepayers. The community of Deloraine needs to know that their views will be listened to and taken into account," said Linda Poulton, WRAP spokesperson.
