Government discusses prison site options
WRAP welcomes the statement by the Minister for Corrections today that the Government has discussed shifting the Northern Regional Prison proposal off the Brushy Rivulet reserve.
"We have always said that building a maximum-security prison on this rocky, bushfire prone nature reserve was preposterous. It is the worst possible site for the proposal and it's common sense to drop it altogether.
Given the announcement that AYDC will close, Ashley has inevitably presented itself as an alternative site.
It appears that there is some support in the wider community for the Ashley site to be repurposed for adults. Our experience is that community support would grow if the facility were therapeutic, rehabilitation focussed and on a smaller scale.
Whatever tack the Government takes, we strongly urge them to meaningfully consult the people of Deloraine and Exton as the major community stakeholders, and to do so sooner rather than later," said Linda Poulton.
"We need to know which way the wind is blowing. The community of Westbury has been on tenterhooks for far too long," she said.
